Active, Healthy Living: Outdoor Recreation

The Office of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation fosters outdoor recreation opportunities with provincial recreation organizations (PRO's) through the following initiatives:

Active & Safe Routes to School

Active Transportation

    Provides funding and consultation to agencies working towards the propagation of alternative modes of transportation (eg. cycling, walking, wheeling). For more information, visit the Go For Green Active Transportation website.

Lost! and Found

    An outdoor survival program for children provides elementary aged school children with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to survive in the woods. Free posters for children and resource booklets are available from any of our offices.

Naturalization

    In conjunction with various partners, promotes the concept of ecological restoration of the environment for outdoor recreation.

Nova Scotia Outdoor Leadership Development Program (NSOLD)

    Develops the skills, knowledge and attitudes of potential or existing outdoor leaders by offering weekend modules and supports a leadership school and a resource leadership service. For more information, visit the NSOLD page.

Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service (NSLS)

    In partnership with the Lifesaving Society, the NSLS provides supervision of key Nova Scotia beaches. Information on supervised beaches, supervision times and lifeguard competitions available at: www.nsls.ns.ca

Trail Development/Use

    The Office of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation supports the work of trail users, developers and managers through funding, workshops and consultation. Particular emphasis is placed on the Trans Canada Trail, the provincial trail network, the implementation of the Rails to Trails Policy for Nova Scotia, and the abandoned rail line audit process.

Trails Nova Scotia

    Mapping and database of over 500 trails in Nova Scotia, 220 of which are available on the Trails NS Website. Detailed information on Shared-Use Trails, Snowmobile Trails, Canoe Waterways, Sea Kayak Routes, and Coastal Water Trails in all parts of the province. Also check out Go for Green's Trails Canada website for trail opportunities across the country at www.trailscanada.com.

Trails Manual

    The manual on Developing Recreation Trails in Nova Scotia: Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Management is available from the Nova Scotia Trails Federation at 425-5450 ext. 325.

Water Safety

    As the lead organization in government for water safety, the Office of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation funds and/or consults with water safety/ice safety partners at all levels.
