Sport Development: Canada Games Program
Since the inception of the Canada Games program in 1967, the Nova Scotia government has been a proud and enthusiastic supporter of the games, held every two years. Today, the Office of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation provides funding to the Canada Games Management Group to oversee the preparation and management of Team Nova Scotia. The games are an important opportunity for Nova Scotians to excel in sport, and to develop skills that contribute to success in life.
Canada Games provide a unique national level competition experience in a multi-sport environment for Nova Scotia athletes, coaches, managers, officials and volunteers. The games are an opportunity for individual development, cultural and social development of young Nova Scotians and, from time to time in hosting the games, a way for the province to develop new facilities.
Canada Games participants learn success is connected to commitment and dedication. They develop self-discipline, time management and leadership skills - important tools for achieving personal goals - in sport and, later, in their careers. Young Nova Scotians learn to manage success, and disappoinment, through developing a sense of sportsmanship and respect for others.
An important part of the Canada Games experience is about making friends. Most Canada Games' alumni will tell you about their life-long friendships, and how those friendships broadened their knowledge of Canada and what it means to be Canadian.
For these reasons, the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission continues to support and value the Canada Games program.
