The Annapolis Valley Events and Sport Tourism Association (AVESTA) awards celebrate the achievements of valley events and festivals recognizing the important positive economic and social impact these organizations bring to the region. The winners will be announced at the annual luncheon on October 27.

The finalists are:
Event Legacy Award (sponsored by the Town of Windsor): Deep Roots Music Festival; Festival of Lights; and Wharf Rat Rally.

Sport Legacy Award (sponsored by the Municipality of the County of Kings): Berwick Men’s and Women’s Slow-pitch Tournament; Digby Golf Classic; and Gunn Baldursson Memorial Soccer Tournament.

Venue of the Year Award (sponsored by the Town of Wolfville): Acadia University; Al Whittle Theatre; and St. Croix Ballfield and Recreational Complex.

Event of the Year Award (sponsored by the Town of Kentville): 2011 Canada Winter Games Biathlon Competition; 2011 Canada Winter Games Snowboard Competition; and Sr. Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships.

Guest speaker (sponsored by the NS Department of Health and Wellness) is Bruce Beaton speaking about the power of sport. Bruce is a three-time Canadian Football League All-Star and author of the recently released book, “Little Athletes Big Leaders”.

Seniors Fitness Instructors Certification course - Oct 22 & 23 and Nov 5 & 6 at Berwick Town Hall Gym

Want to lead a program for older adults in your community? This workshop is for you!
The Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging offer a 4-day Seniors Fitness Instructor Certification course.

Upon becoming a certified Senior’s Fitness Instructor, you will:

  • Promote the philosophy and values of the CCAA when planning and delivering physical activity programs.
  • Screen and assess older adults for their fitness program using protocols learned in the SFIC.
  • Use assessment data to plan, implement and evaluate exercise prescriptions to meet the unique needs of participants as indicated by the performance standards for the SFIC.
  • Provide a safe environment, minimize and be capable of dealing with emergencies when they do arise as outlined in the SFIC.
  • Maintain a participant centered environment applying the principles of adult learning to the design and delivery of the physical activity program according to SFIC methods.
  • Continually improve your performance using self-evaluation, peer evaluation and by meeting recertification criteria.

Municipal Recreation Workshop - Stars Among Us
On October 28, 2009, fifty-two delegates attended a Valley municipal recreation workshop representing four municipalities, nine towns, four villages and eight partner organizations including two school boards, two community health boards, one health district health authority, two sport tourism associations and one trail coalition

The workshop brought together municipal officials, municipal staff and partners of Nova Scotia Health and Wellness in the Valley region for a sharing of municipal initiatives. Through panel discussions and displays participants learned about and shared information on over twenty unique municipal partnerships and opportunities.
