West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes that have fed on the blood of infected birds. So far in the 2006 season, there have been no West Nile virus-positive birds in Nova Scotia.

During the summer of 2005, Nova Scotia had one confirmed human case of West Nile virus (WNV) which was contracted while traveling in an area where there were high numbers of human cases. Other than the travel-related case, there was no West Nile virus activity in the province in 2005.

Testing of dead birds for the 2006 West Nile season is now underway. Test results will be updated weekly on West Nile Watch beginning in July.

For tips to protect yourself and your family from West Nile Virus, to make your yard less mosquito friendly, or to learn more about safely applying insect repellants, please see the fact sheets below.
