Enhanced Vision Screening Program

Eighty percent of learning in the preschool age group is through the channel of vision (CNIB, 1978). Preschoolers with vision problems may experience difficulty and frustration in their cognitive and perceptual development. A child is very unlikely to recognize that their vision is poor, particularly if the problem is in one eye only. Additionally, there may be no outward signs to alert the parents.

Vision screening is done by public health staff when children start school because it is important to catch any problems right away. Catching vision problems early means that they can be corrected before children start having difficulty in school.
