H1N1 (Human Swine Influenza)

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself, and those around you, from getting sick with the flu and what can be a serious illness. The H1N1 vaccine is available to all Nova Scotians through physician offices.

You should also continue to take the following precautions to stay healthy, including:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after a sneeze or cough.
  • If soap and water aren't handy, use 60-90% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow or sleeve.
  • If using tissues, throw them away and wash your hands.
  • Limit touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Do not share drinking glasses, water bottles, mouth guards, cosmetics or eating utensils.
  • Frequently clean and disinfect common surfaces with regular household cleaner at least daily.

Developing good basic hygiene habits will not only help to keep you healthy during flu season, it will also protect you from a range of other infectious diseases.

If you or a loved one is experiencing flu symptoms, consult the Influenza Decision Chart to help you and your family make decisions about when to seek medical attention.
