Defining Problem Gambling

Problem gambling can affect anybody, from any walk of life, from any part of Nova Scotia at any age. Sometimes it is difficult to know if gambling is having a negative impact.

If you know that their gambling:

  • gets in the way of their work, school or other activities
  • harms their mental or physical health
  • hurts them financially
  • damages their reputation
  • causes problems between them and their partners or family and friends

. Chances are, there is a problem.

In situations where people realize that their gambling is creating problems in their life, they will speak to someone they trust. Often this will be you.

Shame, guilt, despair and anger are all emotions felt by those impacted by problem gambling. When someone comes to you seeking solace and direction, we are here to support your work.

Other times your help will not be sought, but you notice signs that lead you to believe that a person is struggling. Please see the Signs of Problem Gambling section for questions to ask in these situations.
