A number of diseases can be transmitted to humans from insects and animals. Diseases that insects such as ticks, mosquitoes, and flies can pass along to humans are called vector-borne or arthropod-related diseases. Diseases that animals can transmit to humans are called zoonotic diseases.
Some diseases, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus, have been a growing problem in recent years in some parts of North America. Others, such as rabies, have largely been brought under control but can still pose a health threat.
