Meningococcal Disease


What is Meningococcal Disease?

Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection. Meningitis is the name of any infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.
 

Who can get Meningococcal Disease?

Anyone can get meningococcal disease. It is spread by direct contact with secretions from the nose and mouth by kissing or sharing food, drinks, pop bottles, toothbrushes or eating utensils.
 

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • A change in the level of alertness
  • Stiff neck
  • Possibly a small, purplish rash on the upper body
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
     

What is the treatment?

Early diagnosis and treatment are important. If symptoms occur, a doctor should be contacted immediately. Meningococcal disease can be treated with antibiotics.
 

How can Meningococcal Disease be prevented?

  • If you plan to travel to countries where meningococcal disease may be epidemic, consult a travel clinic beforehand.
  • Practice good hygiene. Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Don’t share food, eating utensils, glasses, toothbrushes, lip-gloss, water bottles or smoking materials.
