Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention

The burden of chronic disease, such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, is significant. In addition to the human toll, it is estimated that these diseases cost the health system in this province more than $3 billion each year. Fortunately, many of these diseases can be prevented – up to 40 per cent.

In Nova Scotia, chronic diseases account for almost three-quarters of all deaths, and are the largest cause of premature death and hospitalization. Within HPP, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention focuses on the strategic approaches to the prevention of chronic disease and injury and to disparities in the health of populations.
