HIV/AIDS

Q: Where can I get tested for HIV (i.e. the virus that can lead to AIDS)?

A: You can be tested by any family physician who can make the blood requisition either in your name (confidential testing) or instead with a code (non-nominal testing). However, the physician will know your name and you may have to go to your local hospital to have your blood sample taken.

Q: Am I eligible for MSI if I travel outside the country?

A: If you are travelling outside Canada for a short period of time MSI will provide coverage for emergency medical services only, in accordance with the Nova Scotia rates. The Children's Dental Program and the Seniors' Pharmacare Program are not insured outside of the province. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

If you plan to leave Nova Scotia or Canada , for an extended period, please contact MSI before you leave, so we can clarify your eligibility status and the extent of coverage (902) 496-7008 or 1-800-563-8880 (toll free within Nova Scotia ).

Midwifery

Q: Is midwifery being implemented in Nova Scotia?
A
: Yes,The Midwifery Implementation Initiative is introducing publically funded midwifery gradually using model sites in three District Health Authorities/IWK. These sites will represent urban, rural/remote and regional populations. For more information on Midwifery in Nova Scotia visit thier Web page.

Q: Can I access a midwife in Nova Scotia?
A: Introducing a new health profession takes time. Because there are relatively few midwives in Nova Scotia, it will take a while before there are midwives working in all parts of the province. Access to midwifery services will increase over time.

The Midwifery Regulatory Council (MRC) will be able to inform the public about the location of all midwives working in the province. The MRC will begin working when the Midwifery Act comes into effect.
