EHS Special Patient Program

MISSION

The Special Patient Program identifies and promotes strategies to improve comfort and quality of life for patients with life threatening illness or injury and complex needs who are served by EHS.

VISION

Achieved in partnership with other health professionals, the Special Patient Program sets a new standard for personalized pre-hosptial heath care and supports the region's vision and mission of improving health through health promotion, quality service delivery, education and research.

Special Patient Application

Who is qualified to be a Special Patient?

  • Residents of Nova Scotia
  • Patients who have conditions which require protocols that are not specifically addressed by EHS protocols
  • Protocols must be approved by the Provincial Medical Director of EHS

Who benefits from the Special Patient Program?

Patients of any age that have complex and/or extensive conditions that require their own medical care protocols.

Submission

Applications are to be submitted by the patient's attending physician and/or specialist and sent to Emergency Health Services, Special Patient Program 237 Brownlow Ave, Suite 160 Dartmouth, NS B3B 2C5.

What should patients and their families know about this program:

  • Improves patient outcomes
  • Smoother triage
  • Increased confidence enables patients and their families to pursue activities that they may not otherwise have engaged in

What does the Special Patient Card look like and where should it be kept?

The card should be kept on the patient or with the next of kin &/or care giver at all times to ensure the most up-to-date information and protocols are ready for the paramedics if they are called.
