Atlantic Health Training & Simulation Centre The Atlantic Health Training & Simulation Centre (AHTSC) has been in operation since January of 1999. Through a unique partnership between Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia, the Capital District Health Authority, the Departments of Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and the Division of Critical Care at Dalhousie University, AHTSC faculty are able to provide experiential learning and competency maintenance opportunities to a broad spectrum of health care practitioners utilizing leading-edge simulation-based clinical learning platforms. What Is the Atlantic Health Training and Simulation Centre? The Atlantic Health Training and Simulation Centre is a clinical learning facility where faculty utilize the most up-to-date clinical simulation technology to help practitioners develop and enhance their critical thinking and interventional skills. The clinical simulators used in the centre are highly sophisticated computer based life-sized mannequins and part-task simulators that can demonstrate many clinical signs, physiological responses to the administration of medications, anesthetic, and theraputic gases, and approximate tissue-plains for many critical interventions. The simulation lab can be configured to resemble an OR suite, an ICU or emergency department resuscitation room, or an out-of-hospital environment as required, and is equipped with all the appropriate medical equipment and supplies. In addition, the lab room is equipped with video and audio recording devices that are used to review and discuss participants' performance in debriefing sessions. The centre can also deliver all of its course offerings in the mobile environment, bringing educational opportunities to medical facilities, ambulance bases etc., allowing participants to learn in their own working environments. Who Uses the AHTSC? The centre can be utilized by a wide range of professionals, including:
Why Should I Use the AHTSC? The AHTSC is extremely diverse and can be utilized to meet a broad range of educational needs for all levels of patient care providers. For example, the simulator can provide training in acute crisis resource management (ACRM), advanced medical interventions and management (i.e. trauma), as well as training in basic medical procedures, basic pharmacology or equipment usage. The simulation centre allows users to repetitively practice their skills, and learn from experience on a life-like patient - thus there is no compromise to a real patient. The ultimate goal of the simulation centre is to enhance the health professional's ability to function in critical situations. AHTSC Staff & Faculty Bud Avery Dr. J.
