On June 23, 2009, close to midnight, 15 year-old Daniel Blinkhorn was awakened by a smoky smell and bad taste in his mouth. When he opened his bedroom door to get a drink from the kitchen, he found his home engulfed in flames.

Mr. Blinkhorn was able to get outside, but quickly realized his mother was still in the house. He went back into the house, but was unable to reach his mother’s bedroom. Mr. Blinkhorn then knelt on the floor close to his mother’s room and called her name so she could follow the sound of his voice.

On hands and knees, his mother was able to crawl out of the house and follow her son to safety.
