What Is the Impact That Education Has on the Geomatics Communities?

The Government of Nova Scotia, through a joint initiative of the GeoNOVA Secretariat and Department of Education’s Learning Resources and Technology Services, is investigating the impact that education has on the geomatics communities, with an emphasis on understanding the opportunities that might exist in education supporting the industry today and into the future. This effort comes as a direct response of what GeoNOVA heard as an industry need, during the Spring into Geomatics 2008 conference held in Truro this past year.

As a first step, a series of four workshops are to be held, engaging the geomatics industry, public school educators, post secondary institutions and recent geomatics graduates. The purpose of the four sessions is to gather information including the needs and expectations of the geomatics community for new entries into the workforce, on how public schools and post secondary institutions prepare students for a career in geomatics, and the experience of recent geomatics graduates entering the workforce. This work will ultimately position the province to better plan for the needs and make potential adjustments in areas such as curriculum, policies, etc. so as to support both the education sectors at all levels and this vibrant and growing industry sector. We could use your help as we investigate need and opportunities.

We would like to extend an invitation to anyone who might wish to have input into the analysis process presently underway. If you or someone you know fit into the category of geomatics employer; school teacher; post-secondary educator; or recent geomatics graduate (2003-present) please email geonova@gov.ns.ca and let us know. We will be finalizing the meeting plans over the coming two to four weeks (including time, location, etc.) and if you contact us expressing interest we will be sure to let you know meeting details at that time. Space is limited so get in touch with us as soon as possible. Meanwhile, if you have any questions regarding this work drop us a line (same email address) with your question and contact details and someone will be in touch with you shortly.
