What's New?

Nova Scotia Digital Orthophotomaps Now Available

The new Nova Scotia Digital Orthophotomaps are now available from the Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre in Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

Nova Scotia's digital Orthophotomaps have been created from geo-referenced aerial photographs which have been rectified to remove image displacements caused by camera tilt and relief of terrain. They combine the image characteristics of a photograph with the uniform scale and geometric qualities of a map. These orthophotomaps are user-friendly and visually appealing, and are often used as backdrops in a digital mapping environment and are a valuable source for base mapping maintenance, verification activities, planning and resource management.

The collection is comprised of two map series - the Resource 1:10 000 Black & White Orthophotomap Series and the Large Scale 1:2000 Colour Orthophotomap Series. The Resource Map series currently covers approximately 70% of the Province and has a pixel resolution of 60cm, while the Large Scale series is currently comprised of over 550 orthophotomaps of urban areas and has a pixel resolution of 15cm or 36cm, depending on the scale of photography utilized.

Orthophotomap availability can be viewed through the DataLocator, available at www.GeoNOVA.ca. Hardcopy plots and digital data is available for all 1:2000 Orthophotomaps. Digital data is also available for all 1:10 000 Orthophotomaps, with hardcopy plots currently available for some areas.

The Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre is responsible for the collection, maintenance, and distribution of provincial foundation geographic information products including topography, geographic names, civic addressing, coordinate referencing, property records, aerial photography and orthophotomaps.

The GeoNOVA Program has a responsibility for providing access to geographic data in the Province of Nova Scotia. GeoNOVA works with provincial, federal, municipal, academia, and others to promote and foster the use of Nova Scotia geographic information. The GeoNOVA Program is part of the Geographic Information Services Section at Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. For access to Nova Scotia geography, please visit www.GeoNOVA.ca.
