  • A Nova Scotia Fish Registry has been established to serve as a database of large, and or, record fish caught in the province. Many angling jurisdictions maintain provincial or state records for large fish.

    Nova Scotia boasts two entries in the Canadian National Fish Registry: a 54.06 lb striped bass caught in the Mira River, Cape Breton County in 1994 and a new Canadian record for chain pickerel from Western Duck Pond, Yarmouth county that weighed 5.77 lbs. breaking the former record of 5.7 lbs. caught in Pothier's Mill Pond, Yarmouth county. Up until now, Inland Fisheries has kept unofficial records of large fish caught in the province. Some of these records meet the criteria for the Nova Scotia Fish Registry and are listed below.

    * There are currently no records in this category for white perch, yellow perch, brown bullhead, shad, white sucker or various salt water species. Anglers are encouraged to submit entries in this category and to be conservation minded. Catch and release and selective harvest can ensure trophy catches and memorable experiences for the future.

    Young anglers (under 16 years of age) are encouraged to submit entries in the "Live Release" category as well.

    Top 10 Lists

    As this program develops and the number of entries increased a Top 10 List will be established for each of the species in the registry. Anglers are therefore encouraged to submit entries for large fish even if they may not break provincial records.
