| Nova Scotia's
seafood industries are a vital part of the provincial economy
and ranks as our number one export by value. In today’s
business and social climate seafood producers must address
many challenges including changing consumer expectations,
environmental responsibility, labour availability, global
competition, productivity and succession planning.
The Seafood Development and Innovation group provides technical,
economic, and strategic support to the commercial seafood
sector to address the challenges they face and to take advantage
of emerging opportunities in the global economy.
Current priorities for the Seafood Development and Innovation
team include:
- Develop industry based co-operative approaches to reduce
energy consumption by the fishing fleet and processing
plants.
- Promoting communication and leadership skills in the
next generation of seafood industry participants as a
means to address succession planning.
- Lead provincial efforts to facilitate the implementation
of seafood traceability and sustainability certification.
- Leading projects to identify and implement new seafood
processing equipment and methods to enable plants to achieve
optimum quality and productivity.
- Lead provincial efforts to investigate and promote
responsible fishing practices.
- Promote positive perceptions of the seafood industry.
