Commercial Development Programs

Technology Transfer

Nova Scotia's commercial, aquaculture and recreational fisheries generate millions of dollars at the dockside, with a market value of well over $1 Billion. Our Technology Transfer Program, is designed to research methods to fully utilize our fishery resources and provide the essential financial and technical assistance to those involved in various facets of the fishing industry (harvesting, processing, aquaculture and boat building).
  • Promotes research and development of new products, particularly those classified as "value added."
  • Provides information and technology development to enhance the efficient harvesting and utilization of fish resources.
  • Supports development and demonstration projects as a means of introducing new and improved technology to the industry.
  • Administers programs which recognize the importance of diversifying plants, vessels and gear types.

Processing Technology

Staff from the Innovations group work closely with Nova Scotia processors to introduce recent advances and new/innovative ideas to the fish processing industry.

Harvesting Technology
We recognize the need to fully utilize our non-traditional fisheries. Department engineers and technical staff work closely with fishers designing and testing specialized fishing gear to harvest quality products for world markets.

Aquaculture Development
The Innovations group works closely with the aquaculture industry on technical development projects conducted jointly by industry and the department. These projects enable participating shellfish and finfish growers to safely market their products.

Boat Building

Boat builders in Nova Scotia, with the assistance of the Innovations Group, pursue Canadian and International markets for our well recognized and proven designs of commercial fishing, sport fishing, and aquaculture vessels.

F.I.S.H. (Fishing Industry Self Help)

Many challenges encountered in the fishing and aquaculture industry are experienced world wide. Our cost-shared F.I.S.H. Program is designed to provide the end user with first hand experience and contact with those who have already solved similar dilemmas. Not only does this open a door to information and technology, but saves both financial and technical resources as well.

Student Initiatives

We encourage university students to undertake fisheries research projects and introduce them to employment opportunities in fisheries. Our department has sponsored students to complete projects such as the development of tuna containers and the manufacturing of fertilizer from salt fish cuttings.
