Why is a framework needed?
Nova Scotia’s coast is an increasingly busy area, with many different commercial, residential and recreational activities taking place in the water and along our shore. The health and productivity of our coast requires that we achieve a sustainable balance among these many uses and interests. The Coastal Management Framework outlines the leadership and commitment of the Government of Nova Scotia to work to achieve this sustainable balance.
How can I be involved in this process?
Public involvement is essential to the Coastal Management Framework. The public will have opportunities to become involved in a number of the strategic activities identified in the Coastal Management Framework, especially the development of the Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy. Check this site for updates on how you can get involved.
What is the timeline for the Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy?
This process will begin in the summer of 2008 when the Government of Nova Scotia undertakes the first-ever “State of Nova Scotia’s Coast Report”. Release of this report is planned for March 2009, followed by opportunities for public discussion and feedback throughout the spring and summer. Information contained in the report and related public input will form the basis for the Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy, which PON will develop during the fall and winter of 2009/10. The Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy is scheduled for completion by Spring 2010.
How does the Coastal Management Framework fit with other provincial strategies?
The Coastal Management Framework represents a “whole of government” commitment to coastal management. Coastal management touches upon many different sectors and issues, many of which are addressed through other provincial strategies within the overall direction set out in “The New Nova Scotia: A Path to 2020”. The Coastal Management Framework will enable the Government of Nova Scotia to better align and focus the priorities, expertise and resources spread across various departments and sectors to advance our common coastal management objectives.
How does the Coastal Management Framework fit with the other levels of government?
The Coastal Management Framework is only one element in improving coastal management in Nova Scotia. The other levels of government—federal, municipal, and aboriginal—all play distinct and important roles in managing our coast. Collaboration among the different levels of government is a fundamental principle of the Coastal Management Framework. By working together more closely, governments can address priority coastal issues in a more comprehensive and efficient manner.
