The Coastal Management Framework lays out six strategic activities that will accelerate action on priority coastal issues. While each activity is distinct; they are complimentary, interconnected, and designed to work in concert.
- Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy
The Government of Nova Scotia has identified several priority coastal management issue themes. While each of these issues are distinct, they all share a common linkage in that they either impact on, or are impacted by coastal development. A Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy will provide a road-map and a suite of tools for Nova Scotians to achieve sustainable coastal development. The first step towards this strategy will be compiling a State of Nova Scotia’s Coast Report which will provide an overview of the current state of Nova Scotia’s coastal areas and resources.
- Coastal Web Portal
Integrated approaches to coastal and ocean management requires good information and good communication. A web portal will provide coastal users and decision-makers with a common access point for information and expertise.
- Public Education and Awareness
One of the main drivers behind the Coastal Management Framework is the need to increase Nova Scotians’ awareness about the value and importance of our coast. This will take place through research projects, public education campaigns and outreach events such as the annual Oceans Day Celebration.
- Coastal Research Network
A coastal research network among public, private and academic research institutions will help to advance, promote, conduct and disseminate quality research on coastal issues in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.
- Establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Government on Coastal Management
Implementing an integrated approach to coastal management in Nova Scotia will require a long-term commitment by all levels of government. An MOU will help to address uncertainty by clarifying jurisdictions, priorities, and management approaches.
- LIDAR Mapping
Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) mapping is an accurate and rapid method of identifying coastal features and elevation. Planning for sustainable development in highly dynamic environments such as the coastal zone requires updated, accurate baseline data and this technology is one of the most effective. The LIDAR mapping initiative will help to identify priority coastal areas of Nova Scotia for mapping, while also developing tools to utilize this information effectively for land-use planning.

State of Nova Scotia’s Coast Report
The first step toward achieving sustainable coastal development is to understand the present state of our coastal areas and resources. A State of Nova Scotia’s Coast Report will provide:
- an understanding of the current and anticipated challenges and opportunities;
- a distinction between real and perceived opportunities and threats associated with coastal development;
- an identification of key information, both existing and required, which is needed to guide sustainable coastal development
Sustainable Coastal Development Strategy
From this baseline of knowledge, the Government of Nova Scotia will identify what is required to ensure that future development of our coastal areas and resources takes place in a sustainable manner with maximum benefit to Nova Scotians.
