Due to MSX, American oyster landings have declined significantly and research and development is underway.

Decreases in Atlantic salmon production and value figures were mainly due to bankruptcies, several catastrophic ice and superchill (extremely cold seawater) events during the winter of 2004, a strengthened Canadian dollar and delayed marketing due to competition from Chile.
