Aquaculture Site Development

Road Map for Site Development

To expand the aquaculture industry in Nova Scotia and deliver on the promise of wealth and jobs in rural, coastal Nova Scotia, site development is a vital activity. Aquaculture companies require new sites and they need to expand their existing sites.

The Department must have the ability to pro-actively assess Nova Scotia's coastal aquaculture potential so it can advise investors of the best growing locations for key aquaculture species.

The Department will create a Road Map for Site Development that reflects the most relevant bio-physical (temperature, wave energy, bottom type, water depth) and socio-economic (population density, marine infrastructure, fish processing capacity, competing interests) information.

The Road Map will be developed by assembling and validating existing data from reliable sources in a way that highlights the areas with greatest potential for aquaculture development.

Site Development Assistance

The assessment of aquaculture sites requires the collection and analysis of many complex bio-physical and socio-economic factors. An accurate and thorough job done on site assessment makes the application process easier and the productivity of sites greater in the long run.

Regulators demand this information in order to assess applications and aquaculturists need to assure themselves they are investing in a site with excellent growing capacity.

Acquiring detailed information about the characteristics of a site has become a highly technical and costly endeavor. In many cases, these costs prevent aquaculturists from submitting applications and stop them from making new investments in Nova Scotia.

Large and small operators need help to assess specific sites during the application process. The Department will offer financial assistance to offset the costs of assessing potential sites. In this way, the Province of Nova Scotia can aid in the professional and orderly expansion of the aquaculture industry.
