Aquaculture Training
What's as old as the pyramids, worth millions of dollars and found right here in Atlantic Canada? It's aquaculture, and it could be the key to your future!

For thousands of years, people have not only harvested the bounties of the sea, but planted its crops as well. As demand for fish increases, raised stocks will become more vital, both to our food supply and our economy as well.

The United Nations says one third of the world's total food fish supply comes from aquaculture. On average, for all countries except China, the per capatia food availability has grown at an average rate of 4.1 percent per annum between 1984 and 1998.

Closer to home, in 2001, aquaculture brought in over $665 million in Canada, over $274 millon in Atlantic Canada and $36.25 million right here in Nova Scotia.

It's an industry on the grow. Get in on the action!

How do I get into this?

Interested in achieving a thorough education for a very exciting career in Aquaculture?

The Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro offers the only comprehensive undergraduate training in Aquaculture in Atlantic Canada. The courses provide a unique blend of animal husbandry skills with management training necessary for an intensive education in aquaculture.

Should I consider aquaculture?

If you enjoy working with animals, particularly fish, are willing to work outside in any kind of weather, love being around the water, have a love of nature and enjoy trying new things, aquaculture may be the field for you.

Can I make a good living at it?

With steady growth and good record keeping, your farm can grow to provide a solid, sustainable business. It's not a get-rich-quick scheme; some farms take a few years before species are ready for harvest, but like the family farm of generations ago, aquaculture operations can become a family-run business that grows with them.
