More Nova Scotians work as teachers and university professors than in fish processing, forestry and construction put together. In fact, [NS] has the largest number of universities per capita of any province, making it one of the most knowledge-intensive regions in the country.

The North American economy has been driven by big industrial engines..[such as].. automobile manufacturing and parts. But in the new economy, this engine has been replaced by computers and semiconductors... health and medicine has surplanted housing .... communications and telecommunications has taken [over] from transportation.

• About 28% of all employees ( 1 in 4 ) are Knowledge workers.

• Knowledge workers outnumber production workers 3 to 1.

• Industries with the largest concentrations of knowledge workers are Education (64%), Business (54%), Health (50%), Government (50%).

• Computers, Health and Communications are the engines of growth, and because they are knowledge based they are defined as our knowledge industries.

• Knowledge Industries employ about 20% of all employees.

• In terms of employment, Health and Communication Industries dominate N.S. Knowledge Industries.

• Health and Computer Industries are increasing their share of employment relative to Communications Industry.

• More than 65% of employees in the Computer Industry are Knowledge workers.

• More than 50% of employees in the Health Industry are knowledge workers.

• More than 40% of employees in the Communications Industry are knowledge workers.
