FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, FEBRUARY 2024

Monthly (February 2024 vs January 2024, seasonally adjusted)

 

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 1.8% to $188.6 million - the smallest percentage gain among provinces. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased by 3.8% from January to February, up to $8.16 billion. All provinces reported monthly gains in receipts for food services and drinking places led by British Columbia.

Year-over-year (February 2024 vs February 2023)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 2.5% year-over-year in February. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.4% with year-over-year gains in all provinces except Prince Edward Island. Alberta and New Brunswick reported the fastest percentage gains in year-over-year food service receipts. 

 

Year-to-date (January-February 2024 vs January-February 2023)

Nova Scotia's year-to-date food services and drinking places receipts increased 1.2% in the first two months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Nationally food services and drinking places receipts increased 2.5%. All provinces except Prince Edward Island reported a year-to-date increase in receipts, Alberta and New Brunswick reported the fastest percentage gains in year-to-date food service receipts.

Nova Scotia's year-to-date gains in food service receipts are attributable to the increases in limited service eating places as well as full-service restaurants. Nova Scotia food service receipts were down year-to-date for drinking places as well as for specialty food services such as mobile and catering.

Trends

Nova Scotia's food service receipts exhibit more volatility than national food service receipts, but have generally followed national trends.  After trending down in early 2023, food service receipts have risen through the latter part of the year. 2024 continues to exhibit the growing trend in the first two months.
