The US unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent (from 9.8 percent last month) as the American economy lost a further 190,000 jobs in nonfarm payroll employment. This is consistent with average monthly job losses of 188,000 reported for the last three months. Since the start of the recession, US payroll employment has fallen by 7.3 million. US job losses continue to be concentrated in manufacturing (-61,000), construction (-62,000) and retail trade (-40,000). Job losses in construction have recently been more acute in non-residential and heavy construction, reversing the earlier portion of the recession when residential construction bore the brunt of job losses. These results fall short of market expectations. Market analysts had expected further US job losses of 175,000 for October and an unemployment rate of 9.9 percent. This news may be expected to have an impact on financial and currency markets.
