Auto Insurance Reforms 2011

The provincial government kept its promise to review Nova Scotia’s auto insurance system to ensure it meets the needs of today’s families.

Reforms, announced on November 9, 2011, balance fairness, affordability and stability to ensure Nova Scotians have the best auto insurance coverage.

These reforms are based on recommendations (PDF) from the independent auto insurance review, which included consultation with the insurance industry, stakeholders and Nova Scotians. The provincial government also considered a report (PDF) from Utility and Review Board which included a cost analysis.

These reforms represent a major change in the automobile insurance system in Nova Scotia. To allow the insurance industry enough time to prepare new products and processes and train staff, these reforms will be implemented in two phases.

Phase one reforms will be effective on April 1, 2012. (PDF)

Phase two reforms will be effective on April 1, 2013. (PDF)
