This page is intended to advise of system changes and new features as well as work under development.

The system was released on the public internet on January 25, 2005. The system is under development and will be updated on a regular basis as additional data and features become available.

Recent updates:

  • Crime Prevention and Reduction Policy View is Now Available!

    Community Counts is launching a new tool - Community Counts for Crime Prevention - to support decision-making about crime prevention and reduction programs in communities.

    Community Counts for Crime Prevention introduces a new feature on Community Counts - policy views of data about communities. The Crime Prevention and Reduction Policy View includes:
    • Justice Geographic View (Police Districts and Justice Centres);
    • Community Crime Prevention and Reduction Profiles showing crime statistics and risk factors for crime;
    • Maps of Nova Scotia showing comparative crime data for Police Districts and Justice Centres.

Version 1.7 updated May 31, 2007

  • A Justice View has been added to the Community Counts system. This view includes 2 new boundaries: Justice Centres and Justice Police Districts. Associated boundary maps have also been added to the system.
  • 2006 Population Estimates data are now available.
  • Revised Community Boundaries.
  • Revised Regional Development Authority Boundaries.
  • 2006 Population data is available in the Population by 5 Year and Population by Selected Age Groups. At this time, data is only available for total population.

Version 1.6 updated March 22, 2006 includes the following:

  • Community Profiles - provide an overview of each of the communities and geographic areas in the Community counts system. These profiles use selected indicators to describe key demographic features of each community.
  • Population Pyramids - provides graphical representation of the changing population age distribution. By gender for each 5 year age group.
  • Improved Printable Maps navigation and interface. New versions of geographic boundary maps.

Version 1.5.2 updated September 26, 2005 includes the following:

  • Export to Excel feature - all tables can now be exported to Excel directly rather than copy and paste. The exported tables may have a different format and layout than displayed on the screen.
  • Additional graphs
  • Corrected taxfiler Income tables
  • Education attainment by gender is now available on a comparable basis for 1991, 1996 and 2001

Version 1.5.1 updated July 14, 2005 includes the following:

  • Addition of graphs for demographic subject area. Other subject area graphs will be added over the next few weeks.
  • Initiation of the Social Subject Area with unpaid care data and collisions data (the first of provincial administrative data)

Version 1.5 released June 8, 2005 includes the following revisions:

New 'Views" feature which includes the option to look at the data by Health, Electoral or Municipal views. The provinces and territories, counties and communities are common to each of the views. Each view adds two layers of geography relevant to the view:

  • Health View - District Health Authorities and Community Health Boards
  • Electoral View - Federal Electoral Districts and Provincial Electoral Districts
  • Municipal View - Regional Development Authorities and Municipalities

By Topic: Many topics now have the option to look at the data by number or percent.

Thematic Maps - all thematic maps have been recreated to reflect the additional geographies as well as to incorporate improved practices for thematic mapping. More thematic maps have been added.

Charts - many new comparative charts have been added

Statistical summaries - added Mar 8, 2005 for each geography

Note: 2006 Census data will start to be released in March 2007. The detail data needed for the Community Counts system should be available starting in the summer of 2007 with an expectation of being on our web site in the Fall of 2007. Full 2006 Census data will be updated as it is released and will likely be the end of calendar year 2008 before it is all updated. >For detailed Statistics Canada release dates see: 2006 Census Release Topics and Dates.
