Population
Based on the 2011 Census of Population, Herring Cove has a population of 2,734 which is 0.4% lower than in 2001. In 2011, 22.5% of the population was under the age of 20 and 14.2% was 65 years or older.
In comparison, Nova Scotia has a population of 921,725 which is 1.5% higher than in 2001. 21.2% of the population was under the age of 20 and 16.6% was 65 years or older.

Family StructureIn Nova Scotia, family structure has shifted from the traditional larger married families to smaller married families and an increase in both common-law and lone-parent families.
In 2011, for Herring Cove, total census families increased 0.4% to 838. Married families decreased by 6.8% while common law families increased 71.4% and lone-parent families increased 22.0%. Lone female parent families were 10.3% of all families while lone male parents were 3.0% of all families.
In Nova Scotia, total census families increased 2.7% to 270,065. Married families increased by -2.1% while common law families increased 28.3% and lone-parent families increased 5.9%. Lone female parent families were 13.9% of all families while lone male parents were 3.4% of all families.
Language
In Herring Cove, 98% speak only English in the home. This compares to 95.4% respectively for Nova Scotia. 0.5% of people in Herring Cove speak only French at home and 0.2% speak French and English at home. For Nova Scotia, 1.7% speak only French at home, while 0.2% speak English and French at home.
