Population

Based on the 2011 Census of Population, Pugwash has a population of 1,420 which is 8.3% lower than in 2001. In 2011, 14.8% of the population was under the age of 20 and 27.6% was 65 years or older.

In comparison, Nova Scotia has a population of 921,725 which is 1.5% higher than in 2001. 21.2% of the population was under the age of 20 and 16.6% was 65 years or older.

Family Structure

In Nova Scotia, family structure has shifted from the traditional larger married families to smaller married families and an increase in both common-law and lone-parent families.

In 2011, for Pugwash, total census families decreased 8.3% to 405. Married families increased by 5.5% while common law families increased 14.6% and lone-parent families decreased 55.8%. Lone female parent families were 8.6% of all families while lone male parents were 2.7% of all families.

In Nova Scotia, total census families increased 2.7% to 270,065. Married families increased by -2.1% while common law families increased 28.3% and lone-parent families increased 5.9%. Lone female parent families were 13.9% of all families while lone male parents were 3.4% of all families.

Language

In Pugwash, 99.2% speak only English in the home. This compares to 95.4% respectively for Nova Scotia. 0% of people in Pugwash speak only French at home and 0% speak French and English at home. For Nova Scotia, 1.7% speak only French at home, while 0.2% speak English and French at home.
