Population

Based on the 2006 Census of Population, Halifax Regional Municipality has a population of 372,810 which is 8.7% higher than in 1996. In 2006, 22.7% of the population was under the age of 20 and 12.1% was 65 years or older.

In comparison, Nova Scotia has a population of 913,465 which is 0.5% higher than in 1996. 22.8% of the population was under the age of 20 and 15.1% was 65 years or older.

Family Structure

In Nova Scotia, family structure has shifted from the traditional larger married families to smaller married families and an increase in both common-law and lone-parent families.

In 2006, for Halifax Regional Municipality, total census families increased 8.7% to 105,185. Married families increased by 4.7% while common law families increased 54.3% and lone-parent families increased 16.9%. Lone female parent families were 13.8% of all families while lone male parents were 2.8% of all families.

In Nova Scotia, total census families increased 5.3% to 267,415. Married families increased by -1.4% while common law families increased 43.2% and lone-parent families increased 14.1%. Lone female parent families were 13.9% of all families while lone male parents were 3.0% of all families.

Citizenship & Mobility


Compared to Nova Scotia, Halifax Regional Municipality has a relatively high immigrant population. In 2006, there were 27,405 immigrants which is 7.4% of the population compared to 5% immigrants for Nova Scotia. In Halifax Regional Municipality, 97.5% of people were Canadian citizens compared to 98.3% for Nova Scotia.

67.5% of Halifax Regional Municipality's population was born in the province of their residence.

In Halifax Regional Municipality, 40.9% of the population moved within the last five years. 27.3% moved within the municipality, 3.8% moved within the Province, 7.5% moved within Canada, and 2.3% moved outside of Canada. A higher percentage of residents moved in the last five years than in Nova Scotia (33.2%).

Language

In Halifax Regional Municipality, 95.9% speak only English in the homeand 98.7% speak only English at work. This compares to 96% and 97.8% respectively for Nova Scotia. 1% of people in Halifax Regional Municipality speak only French at home and 0.2% speak French and English at home. For Nova Scotia, 1.9% speak only French at home, while 0.1% speak English and French at home.

Median and Average Income

In 2006, the median income for individuals in Halifax Regional Municipality was $28,531 a year, compared with the median of $24,030 for Nova Scotia. Families in Halifax Regional Municipality had a median income of $66,881, compared with the median of $55,412 for Nova Scotia.

In 2006, 84.7% of the population of Halifax Regional Municipality, age 20 and over, had a post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree. In Nova Scotia, 77.1% have completed a post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree.

At the same time, 15.3% had no certiciate, diploma or degree. 22.9% of Nova Scotia had no certiciate, diploma or degree.

Occupied Dwellings

In 2006, 64% of the population of Halifax Regional Municipality owned their dwellings and 36% rented, this compared with 72% and 27.6% for Nova Scotia respectively. In Halifax Regional Municipality, 35.1% of dwellings required either major or minor repairs in 2006, as compared to 34.4% in 1996.

The average value of dwellings in the area increased 87.3% between 1996 and 2006 to $212,853. Average major monthly payments for homeowners was $988 in 2006, compared with $746 in 1996. Average monthly rent in Halifax Regional Municipality increased from $597/month in 1996 to $754/month in 2006.

In Nova Scotia, the average value of dwellings in the area increased 82.5% between 1996 and 2006 to $158,000. Average major monthly payments for homeowners was $761 in 2006, compared with $562 in 1996. Average monthly rent in Nova Scotia increased from $538/month in 1996 to $671/month in 2006.

There were 298,390 persons living in families in 2006, which is an increase of 6.2% from 1996. 2% of persons were living with relatives, 5.2% were living with non-relatives, and 11.7% were living alone. In Nova Scotia there were 751,545 persons living in families in 2006, which is a decrease of 1.4% from 1996. 1.9% of persons were living with relatives, 3.4% were living with non-relatives, and 11.1% were living alone.

Employment Rate

The employment rate for Halifax Regional Municipality residents aged 25 and over increased by 2.8 percentage points to 65.7% between 1996 and 2006 and there were 27,105 more employed workers. Nova Scotia's employment rate experienced an increase by 3.6 percentage points to 58% between 1996 and 2006 and there were 46,050 more employed workers, during this same period.

The employment rate in Halifax Regional Municipality for residents aged 15-24 years increased by 4.4 percentage points, to 58.7% between 1996 and 2006 and there were 5,345 more employed workers. Nova Scotia's employment rate experienced an increase by 7.1 percentage points to 52.9% between 1996 and 2006 and there were 62,287 more employed workers.

Transportation

In 2006, 75.8% of the Halifax Regional Municipality population make use of a vechicle (car/truck/van) to get to work, 11.9% use public transit, and 10.1% walk to work. In Nova Scotia, 83.6% of the population make use of a vehicle to get to work, 5.9% use public transit, and 8.2% walk to work.
