Introduction
You are about to experience the latest innovation in mapping data about your community. Community Counts is developing a new and dynamic set of mapping tools – the Map Centre – which will give you many more options for mapping data of interest to your community. These tools include thematic mapping (e.g. population characteristics) and asset mapping (e.g. services and resources).
Thematic mapping has been a feature of Community Counts from the start.
We have over 900 maps on the site now, showing a wide variety of data about the population for several levels of geography. Each of these maps was “hand-made” by our staff. The new Map Centre will turn the creation of maps over to you - the user - by giving you many more options for choosing the map you want with the data and geographic boundaries that are important to you. You can easily select the features you want and the map will be generated for you “on the fly.” This will dramatically expand the potential number of maps available to you from hundreds to thousands!
Asset mapping is a new feature on Community Counts. It offers you a menu of choices for the assets in your community. It also reflects the latest trend in community development toward mapping assets to inform future development.
What is a community asset? It could be a service or resource that benefits your community.
Put these two features together and you can create a map that shows both population characteristics and community assets on the same map. Do you want to know about the availability of child care? Or resource centres for families with children? Or services for seniors? All of these are possible, and many more!
