 Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be a member of more than one board at a time?
It is the policy of the Executive Council Office, that a person should not be appointed to more than one ABC at a time. However, applicants are encouraged to apply to multiple boards to ensure a better chance of being appointed to a board of their choice.

Can I sit on a board which already has a relative of mine on it?
It is the policy of the Executive Council Office that there shall not be more than one family member on any ABC at a time.

What is the remuneration for being a board member?
For the remuneration provided to members of specific ABCs you should refer to the Remuneration section in the Position Profiles under both the Adjudicative Boards and Non-Adjudicative Boards.

Are travel expenses covered?
For the remuneration provided to members of specific ABCs you should refer to the Remuneration section in the Position Profiles under both the Adjudicative Boards and non-Adjudicative Boards. At the very least, most boards cover reasonable travel expenses.

How often are advertisements for board vacancies posted?
Bulk advertisements for agencies, boards and commissions run in the provincial daily newspapers every April and October. Under special circumstances, advertisements for individual boards are run.

When would I expect to hear back after applying?
You will immediately receive an acknowledgement letter. Appointments to a board could take two to three months. Time must be given to collect resumes. The screening process at each department takes place next and then the final paperwork is prepared and presented to Cabinet and (in most cases) the Human Resources Committee. If you are the successful applicant, you will receive an appointment letter from the Minister in charge of the agency, board or commission.

Can I apply after the deadline stated in the ad?
Yes. Anyone may apply at any time of the year. Applications are considered “active” for two years. The bulk advertisements which run in the provincial newspapers twice yearly are simply to advise the public of the boards that have vacancies currently or will have vacancies in the near future.

Once I apply, how often do I need to reapply?
Every two years.
