Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Using our existing energy supplies more efficiently serves all of Nova Scotia's energy goals.
Energy efficiency and conservation:
- produce permanent savings in fuel costs and greenhouse gas
- increase our energy security
- create new businesses and employment
- buy time for alternative energy technologies to mature
- lessen our impact on the environment
Nova Scotia's energy consumption has been growing at an average rate of about 1 per cent per year. In 2008, we used about 14 per cent more energy than we did in 1990. As a result, we produce more greenhouse gases.
To reverse this trend, Nova Scotia has committed to becoming 20 per cent more energy efficient by the year 2020. Meeting this target will require action in many areas, including education, home upgrades, driving behaviour, building codes, and higher efficiency heating (including options like natural gas).
The province has already helped more than 300,000 Nova Scotians use energy more efficiently through Conserve Nova Scotia.
Conserve Nova Scotia provides practical, meaningful and affordable solutions to help Nova Scotians
make smart energy choices.
