Hydro power generation has been a small, but consistent source of relatively lower cost renewable energy for Nova Scotians since the 1600s.
Most of Nova Scotia's potential freshwater resources have already been developed for hydroelectricity.
However, the Nova Scotia Department of Energy reviews those resources annually, from the perspectives of feasibility, economics, and the environment.
Now, Nova Scotia is looking farther afield for hydro innovation to help build a sustainable energy future for the province.
Nova Scotia is actively engaged in discussions to secure renewable hydro resources from the proposed Lower Churchill Falls development in Labrador (see news release).
That hydroelectricity could be available as early as 2015. However, it would require significant transmission infrastructure to have it delivered to Nova Scotia.
