Electricity Transmission

Nova Scotia has more than 5,200 kilometers of bulk transmission lines (69 -345 kv) and approximately 25,000 kilometers of distribution transmission lines which are operated by the Nova Scotia Power System Operator (NSPSO).

NSPSO is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Nova Scotia's bulk power system.

It functions independently from other Nova Scotia Power Inc. operations under Standards of Conduct approved by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

Nova Scotia has one major 345 kv transmission interconnection with the rest of North America through New Brunswick.

Nova Scotia's transmission system is part of the Maritime Regional Transmission area within the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC), which is part of the North America Electric Reliability Council (NERC).

Nova Scotia Power Inc. must maintain compliance with the NPCC and NERC reliability guidelines.

The Nova Scotia Department of Energy hired a consultant to conduct a study regarding transmission enhancement and system operator options. It was published in December 2009 and is titled Transmission and System Operator Options for Nova Scotia.
