Nova Scotia Energy Electricity Regulations
The Department of Energy supports the development of renewable energy technologies in Nova Scotia.
In the fall of 2004, the Department of Energy introduced the Electricity Act (2004).
It was proclaimed in 2007. This legislation established the mandatory Renewable Energy Standard (RES).
The RES regulations require that, by 2013, 10% of Nova Scotia's electricity supply must come from new renewable sources.
The legislation encourages the growth of renewables by ensuring markets for the renewable power developed by independent power producers.
On February 1st, 2007, the Department of Energy established the Wholesale Market Rules Regulations which enabled the opening of the wholesale market to competition.
Wholesale customers are able to purchase their demand and energy needs from independent power developers.
Nova Scotia Power is currently working with the developers and the wholesale customers to establish supply rates which will enable wholesale customers to enter into agreements with independent producers.
