Energy Training Program

Sean Sobey, AMEC Black & McDonald Co-op Student 2009

The Energy Training Program for Students is an example of the Nova Scotia Department of Energy's commitment to continually develop human resources in the province.

The program runs from early May through the end of August each year, for approximately 17 weeks.

The Energy Training Program Summer Session is being held from May 7th - August 31st, 2012.

To apply for this program, applicants are urged to submit applications early, as the program is experiencing increased demand.

It was created to encourage private sector employers to hire Nova Scotia post-secondary students for career-related work terms in all sectors of the energy industry.

Employers benefit by gaining access to students and recent graduates in a wide range of disciplines from universities and community college campuses in Nova Scotia.

Students gain valuable skills and work experience that will enable them to become part of a highly skilled energy sector workforce.

Energy Training Program - Student Information

Nova Scotia students attending university and community college have the opportunity to test the theories learned in class in "real life" situations in the energy industry. In addition, the program provides:

  • Opportunity to build competency through work experience
  • Wage subsidy for students and new graduates
  • Opportunity to network with industry professionals
  • Students and new graduates can look forward to improved job opportunities in Nova Scotia's growing energy sector
  • Opportunity for personal growth and ability to make more enlightened career decisions
  • Students are able to finance their education through summer and co-op work terms

Energy Training Program - Employer Information

Nevin MacKinnon, Heritage Gas Co-op Student 2009

When employers need to do more with fewer resources, eager, productive, and innovative students and graduates can generate amazing results.

They can bring a fresh approach to an old problem, come up with new, cost-effective ways of doing business, and investigate possible export opportunities. The work provided can encompass a number of valuable functions.

The key component of the program is a wage subsidy.

Small to medium-sized Nova Scotia companies involved in the energy sector may be eligible to receive a 50% wage incentive, to a maximum of $7.50/hour, toward student salaries.

The Results

  • A pool of highly-skilled, knowledgeable employees trained in the energy industry
  • Opportunity for businesses to become involved in the educational process
  • The best and the brightest stay right here in Nova Scotia
