Economic Development
About NSED
Nova Scotia Economic Development provides leadership by helping create the right conditions for a strong, competitive, and sustainable economy. Our primary purpose is to stimulate the economy by helping expand employment opportunities, encouraging the establishment and growth of commerce and industry, and generally enhancing the prosperity and well being of Nova Scotians. This includes designing policies, programs, and activities that strengthen economic and social conditions in the province.

Our Vision
A thriving Nova Scotia that is the best place in Canada to live, work, do business, and raise families.

Our Mission
Creating the conditions to advance economic development and innovation, as well as developing strategies for procurement, information management, and technology.

Our Goals
With our partners, we work towards a common goal: a vibrant economy with opportunities for the business community and a stronger and more prosperous future for Nova Scotia. We measure progress by:
  • Growth in the economy
  • Growth in employment
  • Increased competitiveness
  • Increased access to financial capital
  • Improved government services
Our Corporate Values
In everything we do, Nova Scotia Economic Development strives to be:
  • Strategic
  • Innovative
  • Efficient
  • Sustainable
  • Collaborative
  • Competitive
  • Effective
  • Accountable

Our Partners
A number of agencies are included under the Ministry of Economic Development: We also work with other partners to make Nova Scotia the best place in Canada to do business. They include provincial government departments; regional development agencies; federal, provincial and municipal agencies; and private sector businesses and organizations.

Our Four Priorities

Sustainable Competitiveness
At Nova Scotia Economic Development, our approach to economic growth emphasizes sustainable competitiveness leading to sustainable prosperity. This means taking a holistic approach and integrating economic, social, and environmental systems. Economic growth generates opportunities for innovation and increased potential to compete in the global economy.

Nova Scotia's economic growth strategy, Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity, is intended to shape people's thinking and decisions – inside and outside of government – about economic development. This means focusing on the long-term – not the quick fix. It means understanding that the world is changing – and adapting to that change. And it means making economic decisions that respect our environment, our people, and our quality of life.

Community and Rural Development
By providing economic opportunities at the community level, we help strengthen the overall economic picture for Nova Scotia. Regional development agencies provide the necessary knowledge, training, encouragement, and access to financial assistance to help ensure our rural communities are a good place to live, work, and invest.

Procurement and Supplier Development
The procurement process in the Nova Scotia Government is fair, open, and competitive. The Supplier Development Program encourages more Nova Scotia companies to sell to government. It helps small business operators learn how to bid on government goods and services, and provides outreach services and community workshops on accessing business opportunities with government.

Corporate Information and Technology Strategies
We are innovators, using information and technology to deliver efficient and cost-effective public sector information management. Nova Scotia Economic Development leads the development of information management policies, standards, and guidelines that result in meeting demand, reducing costs, and improving efficiency.
