Province Celebrates Small Business Week, Helping them to Grow, Compete

For 30 years, Small Business Week has been creating opportunities for entrepreneurs across the country to share success stories, talk to leading business experts and exchange innovative ideas.

Your Dream, Your Business, Your Passion is the national theme for events led by the Business Development Bank of Canada and locally by Community Business Development Corporations that begin today, Oct. 19.

In Nova Scotia, the intent of the week will be expanded well into November, making it more like small business month.

The week kicks off with Broadband for Rural Nova Scotia's eMarketing workshops, with the first of four in Baddeck today. The hands-on seminars will show businesses how to use Internet marketing methods to succeed online. Marketing experts will teach, step-by-step, how small and medium-sized businesses are using the Internet to increase markets.

"We are proud of our small business owners and entrepreneurs who are innovators and risk-takers who make ideas become reality," said Percy Paris, Minister of Economic and Rural Development. "I am confident that with high-speed access to the Internet, they will be better able to compete in the global marketplace."

There are more than 30,000 businesses in Nova Scotia, with more than 90 per cent of them small businesses.

"It is vital to support these businesses and important employers for Nova Scotia and nurture a business climate that encourages investment and rewards success," said Mr. Paris.

The Department of Economic and Rural Development, through its Community and Rural Development Division, committed $30,000 to assist the events, which support the growth and development of businesses across the province. The province also supports small business through the Equity Tax Credit, Manufacturing and Precessing Investment Credit, and Home Construction Rebate.
