Province Provides Funding to Improve Main Street in Trenton

Residents of Trenton will have a more user-friendly Main Street to attract tourists, support local businesses and cultivate commercial development.

The province will contribute $142,375 to the town's Main Street revitalization project over two years through the Department of Economic and Rural Development.

"Improving Main Street in Trenton will help the local economy by providing a vibrant place for new and existing businesses to thrive," said Justice Minister Ross Landry on behalf of Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris. "The project will make Main Street more attractive for residents and visitors alike."

The total cost of the project is $958,315. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Town of Trenton will contribute the rest of the funding.

The project will build on the theme of Trenton's industrial past to create tourism opportunities. It will create links to proposed commercial initiatives. The project includes the re-development of commercial space, street-scape improvements, landscaping, paving and park and trail development including water access to the East River.

The Community Economic Development program funding will also help to improve Steele Ladle Plaza, Axel Hammer Plaza and Civic Plaza.

The objective of the revitalization project is to diversify and the enhance the infrastructure, and ecomomy of Trenton.

In 2008-09, the Department of Economic and Rural Development, through Community Development Funds, committed more than $2.5 million to projects across the province. The funding is combined with more than $11 million from other partners to help build strong communities in Nova Scotia.
