Certification for manufactured products
Manufactured products can be
eco-labeled. This means a third-party assessor has determined that a product meets certain environmental leadership criteria and is kinder to the environment than other products within a specific category. They can also be certified for energy efficiency. This is particularly relevant to electronic products.
These are the main certifications:
The
EcoLogo was founded in 1988 by the government of Canada and is now recognised around the world as North America's largest and most respected environmental standard and certification mark. It provides buyers with assurance that the products bearing the logo meet stringent standards of environmental leadership.
Green Seal was started in the United States in 1989. Its environmental certification standards help purchasers make environmentally-based buying decisions.
EPEAT is a certification system that helps purchasers evaluate, compare and select electronic products based on their environmental attributes. Desktop and laptop computers, workstations and computer monitors are currently covered.
Energy Star is a single attribute certification program that looks only at energy efficiency. Created by the federal government program, it has established criteria for a variety of products in more than 40 categories.
