Entertainment
Step out and celebrate with some of Cape Breton's premier entertainers. There will be music and laughs you'll always remember!
Known to thousands of Canadians as the outspoken, handbag-toting Marry Morrison, Gemini award-winning Bette MacDonald's unique, character-driven comedy and countless appearances on stage, TV and radio have earned her the title of ‘Queen of Comedy,' from the Chronicle Herald. If MacDonald is the queen, then her husband Maynard Morrison must be the king. A founding member and major force behind the immensely popular Cape Breton Summertime Revue, Morrison's comedic skills and characters delight audiences nationwide. Our musical guests include Matt Minglewood, winner of the 2006 ECMA Blues Recording of the Year (The Story) , has rocked the blues since 1966 with 12 albums, both solo and with The Minglewood Band. Also taking the stage is fiddler and pianist Howie MacDonald. He's recorded, performed and toured with icons like Natalie MacMaster, The Rankin Family and Ashley MacIsaac. The rich and haunting tones of Men of the Deeps have touched the hearts of audiences across Canada, the United States and as far away as China. In their overauls, hardhats and head lamps, they set the stage for a repertoire of age-old and contemporary songs about life in Cape Breton's coal-mining communities. They are outstanding as the only choir of coal miners in North America. This phenomenal group will provide the musical entertainment at the awards celebration on Thursday evening. Also joining us is the Mi'Kmaq drumming ensemble The Sons of Membertou, who have been performing since 1990. Their unique blend of traditional and contemporary rhythms have been showcased at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards in Toronto, at the G7 Summit in Halifax and on the album Wapna'kik, which was released in 1996. The Inspirational Singers, Sydney's multi-cultural choir led by Mr. Eddie Parris, has entertained at festivals and ceremonies throughout Nova Scotia. They had the honour of performing for Her Majesty Queen II during her visit to Nova Scotia in 1994. Their inspiration will remain with you for a long time after they have finished their songs. Links
