Number of Patents Granted
Patents Granted measures the number of patents per million population (Canadian Intellectual Property Office, 1999).
Issue:
- The number of patents applied for and granted in Nova Scotia is low.
Action to be taken:
- Bring the province benefits from Government of Canada's Innovation Strategy.
- Educate businesses and citizens to become more aware of the patent process. Demonstrate the ease of patent searches and low cost of applying for patents.
- Educate businesses about the exploitation of existing foreign patents and how this can benefit local businesses looking for new products to be manufactured in Nova Scotia.
- Examine if this is the best indicator for determining total number of patents coming out of Nova Scotia. Perhaps Nova Scotia patents in the United States should be included as well.
Outcome:
- Create a more highly involved innovation system
- Increase the number of patent applications and granted applications originating in Nova Scotia.
