Workers' Compensation
Workers' compensation ranking measures the workers' compensation premiums available per covered employee (Statistics Canada, 1999, Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada, 1999).
Issue:
- The cost per employee for worker's compensation benefits in Nova Scotia is high and the coverage is low.
Action to be taken:
- Respond to ‘The Workers' Compensation Program, a Focused Review' and examine specific recommendations in the report to:
- increase the number of employees in the province covered by worker's compensation
- reduce complexities in aspects of the system to reduce administration costs of the Worker's Compensation Board
- continue the 12-year plan to reduce the unfunded liability and continue good financial management; and
- consider increasing the benefits to make them more attractive to employees.
Outcome:
- Nova Scotia's worker's compensation coverage and rates will be competitive within Canada.
