Social networking doubles community festival revenues: Washabuck, Cape Breton
Nestled on the shores of Cape Breton's Bra's d'Or Lake, the community of Washabuck relies on the community centre to bring its 20 families together year round. The annual 10-day summer festival brings hundreds of relatives and visitors alike to events for young and old to enjoy.
Like many rural communities, revenues from event's like this sustain community centres for the coming year. With their new access to fixed-wireless Internet and social networking, hundreds of folks are keeping in touch with the antics of the festival's mascot, Brown's Bear.
Thanks to the website and facebook accounts for both the "Along the Shores of Washabuck" festival and Brown's Bear, this year's revenues increased by well over half. This is great news for the community centre and a terrific example of how the Internet keeps communities connected and draws in visitors.
