It was in the University town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where Nick Kasteljanov, an immigrant from former Yugoslavia, decided to settle 10 years ago. Nestled in the Annapolis Valley, Wolfville reminded him of his hometown in Eastern Europe. Kasteljanov describes the community as “having everything thing he needs for a good life.”

“I started off working at a local restaurant washing dishes, coming to the library at my lunch hour to check emails and communicate with my family. One day I showed the librarian the website I built for my hometown and explained how I was known as the computer guy,” says Kasteljanov. A job opportunity came up at the library C@P site, and he has worked there ever since.

Upon Kasteljanov’s arrival in the Wolfville, he noticed that e-commerce was very important to small businesses in rural Nova Scotia. Everyone wanted websites to promote and sell their products online. He started out specializing in this area and then slowly began shifting his focus on system administration for local companies. As high-speed Internet service became available, additional opportunities occurred naturally.

“As a system administrator before high-speed Internet, you would have needed to physically be on the premises of the network you were supporting. Recently I was actually able to support businesses which are not in this geographical area,” says Kasteljanov. Adding he is able “to support over 90% of a company’s network from anywhere using high-speed access.”

“If I was able to cover companies in Kentville, Halifax and Windsor (and Internet is everywhere) I could support businesses in Japan.” This is now exactly what he is doing. He is “using software on one side of the world, fixing problems on another.” High-speed is opening up an amazing number of opportunities.
