Municipal Program - WHAT IS IT?

The ecoNova Scotia Municipal Program is a Government of Nova Scotia initiative. The program supports municipally run projects that target reductions in greenhouse gas and other air pollutants.
It will directly invest $7.5 million into projects initiated by Nova Scotia municipalities from now until March 31, 2010. This funding was provided by the Government of Canada in 2007.

The objective:
In the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act passed in the spring of 2007, the Province of Nova Scotia committed to improving the environment and economy of the province by:
- reducing its greenhouse gases to 10% below 1990 levels by 2020
- reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by 20% (from 2000 levels) by 2009
- reducing sulphur dioxide emissions by 50% (from sources existing in 2001) by 2010
- reducing mercury emissions by 70% (from 2001 levels) by 2010
- meeting the Canada-wide standard for airborne fine particulate matter by 2010
- meeting the Canada-wide standard for ground-level ozone (which contributes to smog) by 2010
Our communities will play an important role in reaching these goals. The Municipal Program will help:
- assist municipalities reduce their greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, and
- build capacity in municipalities to enable further emissions reductions.
