Tourism Division Mandate

Tourism Division functions include planning and development, marketing and operations. Staff conduct, analyze and disseminate research and statistics. In addition we provide tourism development and planning support, including financial assistance and guidance to communities; planning and secretarial support to the Peggy's Cove Commission; assistance in developing the market readiness of Nova Scotia's most competitive tourism products, destinations and attractions; development and distribution of "How To" tourism development publications designed to assist entrepreneurs and tourism operators; and tourism policy, including developing and supporting government policy that assists in the growth and competitiveness of Nova Scotia's tourism sector.

On the marketing side, the goal is to market Nova Scotia as a tourism destination for the purpose of generating export revenues. Overall, tourism marketing plans are developed and executed under the auspices of the Tourism Partnership Council. Marketing staff conduct: planning and research; advertising with most work handled by Nova Scotia-based Corporate Communications Limited; Internet marketing; literature production and distribution including the "flagship" 400 page Doer's and Dreamer's Guide (including English and French versions), highway maps, festival and event publications, French and German language pieces among others; and editorial programs which involves hosting travel writers and broadcasters and generating our own editorial material for publication. The division also devotes attention to regional programming through specific advertising and literature programs as well as marketing themes and point-of-sale displays. Sales is also a critical function Activities include direct sales calls, hosting travel trade representatives on familiarization tours, as well as representing the province at trade shows, and promotional events.

In addition, staff inspect and license all fixed-roof and campground properties and oversee operation of three provincial Signature Resorts. Staff also operate the provincial Visitor Information Centre network , with centres located throughout the province as well as a tourism literature distribution centre. The division also implements service excellence training and programs such as the Fair and Friendly Exchange. And we provide toll free information and reservation service to people interested in Nova Scotia as a vacation destination through the Check-In service.
